Journey through mountains, through jungle, through pine forest, then down the other side of the mountains, across the Guacamallo (gua-ka-maa-yo) River and then into dense jungle. At the end of the road lies Caracol, the largest mayan ruin in Belize and contested as largest in Central America! First discovered in the 1930's by a log hunter, Rosa Mai, it was not explored until the 1950's by Linton Satherwaite of the University of Pennsylvania. Due to its difficult accessibility, excavations didn't start until 1985, when Drs. Arlen and Diane Chase of Central Florida University started working on Caracol. Caana (sky palace) is a massive structure at its base and towers above the jungle at over 145 feet high. It is so massive, it has three ruins on top! But what makes Caracol the most incredible in Central America is that it conquered the megalopolis Tikal when Tikal was at its peak magnificence! After exploring the main area of Caracol, drive to the Rio Frio (cold river) Cave. The Rio Frio cave is actually a huge tunnel made by the river (Rio Frio) which flows through the mountain. Hike through the huge cavern along side the Rio Frio river and emerge on the other side of the tunnel. Then drive to the Rio On pools and cascades where you can cool off by swimming in the cool pools or by sitting in your own natural jacuzzi. You can also slide down a natural water slide or get a hydro-massage under a waterfall. Or, instead of the Rio On, go to Big Rock Falls.
